Moving news

On Monday we went to see the cottage and the lady we are buying from. Her solicitor hadn't told her that our solicitor was away until the 16th so there was no chance of anything happening before then and for some reason she had got things organised for Friday 13th. She wasn't best pleased and I'm sure she thinks we are holding things up, but nothing we can do about it.
I rang our solicitors secretary as soon as we got home and she assured me that our solicitor rang Mrs F's solicitor before Christmas to tell her about the delay...........honestly who do you believe?

We really went over to the cottage to look at the ride-on mower she's got, it's huge and much bigger than any I've used before. It also has a trailer which is handy for moving wood etc. We need something for cutting the meadow bit although we'll be able to use our small motor mower for round the house. She's going to come up with a price for us to buy it off her.

We got lots more house paperwork in the post yesterday including draft contracts and things to sign. Unfortunately the maps were wrong - missing part of the land we are buying- so everything will have to go back. We rang Mrs F to say we can't exchange until the maps are right and she said that all the information about the small plot of land adjoining the house and garden that they bought in the 1980's was with her solicitor and she specifically pointed out to them that we needed to see the conveyance details for that extra half acre.  Ho Hum!

She said she's now arranged things for the 19th but I think that might be wishful thinking. We feel really sorry for her as she is over 70 and hasn't moved for 30+ years so doesn't realise that things Never go to plan with buying and selling nowadays.

At least we will be able to sort a completion date to suit her removal company as we don't need to move in the day we get the keys. Our removal company date can be flexible too, they are bringing boxes tomorrow so I can get packing.
.

A short book review of a short book........... read it in just a couple of hours.

I picked this up at the library because the cover looked interesting. It's seven short stories linked together by The Girl in the Red Coat and Christmas. Good but not outstanding, glad it was from the library and not purchased.
I've also read this which was  mentioned on someones blog. I'd not read any Georgette Heyer since the 1970's. I'll not be reading any more. Regency Romance is something I can do without!
Snowdrift and Other Stories (includes three new recently discovered short stories) ebook by Georgette Heyer
These are all short stories, 3 newly discovered and the rest originally published in a collection called Pistols For Two.

On the health front........we have seen Col's cancer doctor again and the tablets are doing their job. He told us they will work for about 12-18 months until the Lymphoma comes back too much for the tablets to cope with, which is why the donor stem cell transplant has to be done during the summer. We have a bit of a respite now as Col only needs blood tests and clinic assessments once a month, saving a lot of travelling in the short term ........before we start the huge mileage we'll be totting up going to Addenbrooks.

Back in a day or two

  1. Oh Sue, the gremlins seem determined to undermine you at every turn in the road. I can remember my Mum devouring those bodice rippers but they never appealed to me. The journey to Addenbrookes is a slog, I wouldn't mind a £1 for every time I have done it, but you soon get into the rhythm and the journey flies by. The real issue is parking, just as at any hospital. Fingers crossed that you exchange those contracts asap and can get moved an on with the next chapter of your lives.

    1. Parking is impossible so it's Park and ride at Babraham now - at reduced cost too.

  2. I am so glad that there is no possibility of us being able to move house....even though I would love to live nearer to town. It just seems such a drawn out process these days.
Good news about the tablets Col is taking-x-

  3. House moves are one of the most stressful things....such a shame you have the added stress of Col's illness. Georgette Heyer - now there's a blast from the past, I used to read those in my early teens....romance and all that. It's thrillers and murder mysteries for me now.

  4. I do sympathise about the bungling solicitors. Our offer for our new house was accepted in September and we still haven't got a firm exchange date from the vendors. One example of what we've had to put up with, we asked for a boiler certificate and got sent a copy of a quote for a new boiler dated 2012. I'm trying not to get to stressed by it all. Here's hoping this will be our last move :)

  5. I literally went through the same when we moved into here, it was awful. How these solicitors make a living I don't know. Not trying to stereotype but I haven't had a good review from anyone for a long time!
If it helps, we bought our ride on from the house owner too for £250. Countax mower with trailer, tree shredder thing, snow lough front attachment and the leaf gatherer. It's in great condition :) Hope that helps :)

    1. The ride-on we had at the smallholding and campsite was a bit smaller but we left it for the new owners, never thinking we would move to somewhere with a larger enough area with grass!

  10. Oh dear. Gremlins in the works indeed. There is a protocol involved with all solicitors and therefore if you sre not happy with something or feel sre being fobbed off take it up with the solicitor in the first place and if still not happy with the response take it up with their boss or the partners of the practice as you are as is your seller being charged for the privilege. What seems to be missing is a clear defined line of communication you were not told the solicitor was away otherwise you may have gone to another practice. I work for a solicitors practice in Peterborough. I have been a legal secretary for 32 years plus. When my mum passed and we sold her bungalow i used the firm to deal with the buyer and they did an excellent job for me. Because of work commitments abroad for my brother we dealt with all the signatory bits in advance and it was held by my solicitor to our order and i was in the office in case there were any problems. We then via the estate agent got harangued for the process not moving as quickly as it should do which we were confused about so i got my Senior Conveyancing partner involved. In effect what had happened was that a junior trainee had dealt with the matter and had been left to her own devices and then when her work had been reviewed was not happy with it as she had not done a couple of things as a result which ended up dragging out the procedure further and searches that should have neen done were not. The buyers were then blaming us for lack of progress. However this was only the tip of the iceberg as the buyers needed to be in before their son was married. They had also been notified by their solicitor/trainee thst their funding was all set to go when in fact it was not. A firm of solicitors in Grantham dealt with matters for them. In the end we exchanged and completed on the same day which could be a possibility for you too. If you do not understand what is happenjng in your case or are not happy with explanations given then please take it up with the firm you have instructed. Unnecessary blame causes anger and friction which just heats up things in the long run so try not to get involved on that score. Generally speaking solicitors do try very hard to give a superlative service to their clients as they want you to come back and place further work with them. When choosing a solicitor ask for recommendations from friends and then take it from there. Reccomendations are usually the best.once you find a good one hold onto them. But if your expectations are not met then take it further. Its the only way to improve that solicitors further. If you think the service has been substandard then you msy be able to receive a reduction in your bill. Ask questions and push. Also when you just speak to the secretary nine times out of ten these days a charge will be made for her time so therefore ask to speak to the solicitor or her boss. Am glad to hear that Col is holding his own its a nasty disease. Fingers crossed and toes plaited that everything moves smoothly from hereon in. Take csre pattypan x

  13. Back in the day when a house sold for what today would only buy a small car, the solicitors took the money from the buyers and sat on it for over a year before it actually passed into my parents hands. Solicitors are a law unto themselves and as for being held accountable for their actions, don't make me laugh! Hope it all gets back on track pdq for you.

  17. No wonder moving house is listed as one of the most stressful things in life. I wonder how anybody actually does it when you think about what's involved as well as linking everybody up.

I know you're planning on being as self-sufficient as possible when you move and I'm just wondering if animals will be part of your plan, especially now you have grandchildren. It's the mention of cottage and meadows that's done it - I want you to have chickens and goats and maybe a cow called Buttercup!

Good news about Col, less visits to hospital even for the time being can only be a good thing. xx

  18. I hope all goes well with your moving and documents. Oh dear, a missing map! I have young friends at church who are moving and came across the wrong acreage on the papers they need to sign. They are trying to get it fixed...with a lawyer or they won't buy it. Glad they read the paper work! Missing a whole acre is not good! Praying for Col and his health and yours as well. Much to do,God bless you! Take care!

  20. Good news about Col :-)

We're in the process of buying an investment property and after a few hiccups and let downs we opted to buy off plan and go for a new build. It will be our retirement home one day in the future and will be let out until then t cover it's mortgage and give us a small income to supplement our self sufficiency. It's proving to be sooooo much easier than a usual house purchase.

  21. Good news at last for Col. Moving is stressful...best to just go with the flow...or lack of! Do you ever wish you'd stayed at the smallholding and just let some of the land? x

    1. Not really, because of the campsite, house, buildings, garden, orchards, land all being in good state we wanted to sell then rather than let it get run down as there was much too much work for one person. The land wasn't suitable for letting out

  26. Glad to hear you have had an update for Col and what it all means for you. Sounds as though you will be able to concentrate on the house move and not too too much medical things at the same time. Sorry to hear that things with the sale are trickier than they need to be, I don't understand why these things happen either. Dealing with a house sale here too and it is not easy is it! Hope things look up soon.

  27. Ever heard of the Blank ATM card capable of making cash withdrawal without being caught? I use to be a very poor lady, and life seems to be throwing up on me. So i was left with no choice than to extend my search, and i finally came across Shawbrook ATM Hackers. Though i had my doubts at first, because i have tried getting the card some time ago and i was ripped of my money. But i was left with no choice than to try again simply because i had a better understanding of the card from Shawbrook ATM Hackers. To my surprise, i got the blank card within a week. And with this card, i have been able to withdraw more than $100,000 already. I am using this medium to appreciate the good works of Shawbrook ATM Hackers, for giving the poor, hopeless and homeless a chance to keep on breathing, unlike those other fake hackers that keep on stealing from the poor only to make them more miserable. And to those of you out there having difficulties in life and have as well suffered from the hands of those fake hackers, here is another chance for you. Look no further but contact shawbrookblankatmhackers@outlook.com.

And no one gets caught when using the card. get yours from her. Just send her an email On atmmachine88@gmail.com
